A Dream Deferred No Longer

For 30+ plus years I have been an aviation enthusiast. I can often be found looking up at the sky for passing planes, going out of my way to drive by local airports and, of course, spending long days in the summer heat enjoying airshows. Since as early as I can remember I wanted to learn to fly but too often had some reason I could not pursue that dream. Four years ago I decided I had waited too long to pursue this life-long dream.

My passion for aviation was strong enough that once I determined that I would not wait any longer to achieve this dream an amazing thing happened. I started to find ways to clear the hurdles that had prevented me from achieving my goal before, whether those hurdles were financial, related to finding the time for training or getting over the fear of trying something completely new and different.

The four months that it took me to go from dreaming of being a pilot to taking my wife on her first flight in a small plane with me as a newly minted pilot were some of the most amazing days of my life. I challenged myself in ways I had not in years. My journey into aviation has opened me up to many wonderful new relationships with people who share this interest in aviation. I now see things from a perspective that the vast majority of people who are landlocked miss out on.

I look forward to sharing the readers of this blog some of my experiences as a private pilot. I hope that I can help inspire just one of you who is thinking of learning to fly to visit your local flight school and sign-up for an introductory flight. If you are like most pilots you won't be able to deny yourself the pleasure of flying and you will be on your way to joining a special club of aviators.

    I too am an Aviation enthusiast... I am married with four wonderful children. After watching planes at airports, hanging around FBO's and researching school after school, I finally took the dive and went after my private pilot license.

    Just before I was to take my practical, I moved. I have 50+ hours in a C-172 G-1000.

    While it sickens me that I didn't finish my practical, I just don't know how folks manage to afford flying. It's someting just out of reach while supporint six people.

    How is it done? How do folks go hopelessly into debt for this passion and manage to balance it all out?

  2. Jerry, you might check to see if there is a local soaring club near you. Flying gliders is usually significantly less expensive than powered aircraft if you join a club. I belond to the Texas Soaring Association near Dallas. Our cost is $500 to join, $35 monthly dues, $40 per tow, and $24 per hour rental for a two-place glider. Single-place aircraft are less expensive, but until you solo, you don't have that option.

    During soaring season, which is about 8 months out of the year here, you can be towed up to 3000 ft, find plenty of lift, and stay aloft all afternoon, if you like. It might be worth checking out.

  3. Dream Deferred? No $#!% Story of my life.

    I figure that if 2 survived 2 transplants (3 organs) and was granted my medical, then I was meant to fly.

    I am hitting the books HARD to pass my written before January 31. Then flying this spring. I can not put this off no longer.
